Break In Period Adjustments
New handmade wooden musical instruments go through a “break in” period that may last 1-2 years. Throughout this period your instrument’s “voice” will open up and develop its full richness. During this time it is normal to require frequent string height adjustments while the instrument “settles in” and acclimates to the stresses and string tension. These break in period string height adjustments will be provided free of charge for 2 years from date of purchase.
All shipping charges and insurance fees will be the customer’s responsibility.
Wooden musical instruments are susceptible to climate and humidity. This instrument was constructed in an environment where the relative humidity is maintained at 40-50%. Care must be used to control environmental conditions where the instrument is stored and used. It is recommended that you maintain 40-50% relative humidity for your instrument and that it is not subjected to sudden temperature changes. While your instrument may endure higher relative humidity, low relative humidity or sudden temperature changes can cause the wood to crack or glue to fail and greatly reduce its useful life.
Wooden Instrument Care
My instruments are not sprayed with a lacquer or poly finish. The use of these finishes is harmful to the people applying them and to the environment. Most factory made instruments are coated with a heavy lacquer or poly finish that will withstand more abuse due to scratches or moisture. While these types of finishes may provide more protection, they also inhibit vibration muffling the sound and limiting the sustain of your musical notes.
My handmade instruments are finished in a more eco-friendly traditional way using hand rubbed shellac or oil varnishes applied as thinly as possible. These natural finishes are derived from the secretions of the Lac Beetle, Plant Oils, and Tree Resins. This is the same type of finish that traditionally has been used by master instrument builders for centuries. This thin finish allows the instrument to vibrate more freely improving tone, volume, and sustain. Some care must be used to avoid surface damage from moisture or heavy handed pick use.
Occasional cleaning of your instrument will be necessary but should be limited to only when needed. Use a good quality cleaner designed specifically for wooden instruments. Never use products that contain waxes or silicones. These products will stay on the surface and build up over time resulting in a gummy layer that will inhibit vibration.
